Large Hard Maple Yarn Swift with Ball Bearing BaseFiber Artist Supply Co.
The yarn swift was our very first item back in 2007 and still remains one of our most popular! Our newest model melds the simplicity of our popular tabletop swift arm design with the stability and durability of a sealed metal ball bearing system. Other tabletop yarn swifts --often referred to as "Amish style"-- rely on a wood-on-wood drive system that can lead to loose fit and excessive "play" in the arms as they spin.
For this project we bring together maple and cabinet grade maple plywood to create a yarn swift that will last for many years, but also won't set you back as much as umbrella-style swifts. The tabletop design also gives users the flexibility to wind or unwind from anywhere they can place the swift --we often wind onto our ball winder from the floor. High-quality rubber feet are screwed into the base and keep the swift in place.
Aside from the ability to unwind from this swift, it also has the added flexibility of functioning as a capable skeinwinder for home use. When four of the 3/8" birch pegs are placed at identical spots along the arms, users can create skeins of 24", 36", 48", 60", or 72" in circumference.
This item is individually handcrafted in our Cincinnati, OH workshop.

I am so happy with this swift. My umbrella swift was 7 or 8 years old and the string connections were fraying. It was also hard to find a long enough straight edge to set the swift and my ball winder in tandem. This swift has no wooden surfaces binding so it moves effortlessly. Thank you for such a simple engineered swift.
I had been looking over a year for a swift. My sister had the one with the wooden legs. This one with the ball bearings is wonderful. Very smooth and easy to use. Customer service is excellent! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this swift.
I wrote on Ravelry.com how I was tired of winding yarn from the backs of 2 chairs put together. A woman I don't even know saw my post and gave me this site and told me she had ordered one of these swifts and she loved it. I took her advice after seeing the price and how low it was as many of the umbrella types start at $50 or higher. For only $2 more I bought the larger swift. It arrived within 4-5 days and I set it up so easily and the yarn also winded so easily it was ridiculous! (I already owned a plastic ball winder) My boyfriend decided to "help" by holding the yarn as it went from the swift to the ball winder to keep the tension even. He was very impressed as was I as to the quality of this swift. The wood is sanded smooth and there was no snagging of the yarn anywhere on the swift. The ball bearings made the swift move very smoothly. If you are thinking of getting a yarn swift I highly recommend this one from this company. There is even a tutorial as to how to set up and use the swift. No more using the backs of chairs for me! Thank you Mr. Hale for a wonderful product! When I can afford it the maple ball winder is on my Christmas wish list!
The swift greatly exceed expectations. I've never owned one before and I am so glad I found this company to get this one. Others just don't compare in price or reviews. Excellent job Timothy!
Ordered this swift and it arrived in only two days. Simple, well made design, easy to set up and put away. Smooth operation, sturdy construction with no tipping right from the start. I have seen similar designs for much higher prices, but the quality and price of this product can't be beat.
exactly what i wanted. sturdy, easy to pack away, affordable. i'm glad i got the bigger size since i needed it a few times now.
This is a perfect swift. Works smoothly and without any issues. Great price, great product. Contemplating buying a second to more easily re-skein yarn that I'm dying. Its even made locally to me. Can't get better than that!
I love this yarn swift. Very well made and sturdy. Does not tip or wobble around. The price is by far the best out there. Good solid yarn swift. So glad I found this company. Will buy more items. Thanks so much.
Affordable and functional meets simple and lovely. Swifts often start at $50; this one is $20. There is no danger of it collapsing and making a mess of your hank like with umbrella swifts. Maple is a beautiful choice of wood for this useful yarn tool.
