Maple Jumbo Yarn Ball Winder
This winder stays with our design philosophy: make simple products that work exceptionally well. Six sealed ball bearings allow the winder to spin almost effortlessly while a well-balanced main winding assembly allow users to to opt to wind with or without a table clamp. Hard maple and premium maple veneered plywood are finished with Danish oil.
A modular unit: An important design element that demonstrates quality to me is the ability to disassemble & service tools with little effort. Every tool that receives regular use will need to be cleaned at some point. The ability to quickly disassemble this winder sets it apart from any winder on the market at this price point. You can take the entire unit apart in less than a minute. Suppose you drop the winder and break just one part. Rather than throwing the entire unit away, you can easily purchase just the part you need from this website. Try that with an imported winder. Want to add an "art yarn" guide? Simply loosen the yarn guide set screw and replace the standard yarn guide. It's that easy.
Yarn Capacity: The amount of yarn that this winder (or any winder) can hold depends on the tension placed on the yarn as it is fed into the unit and the thickness of the yarn. You should be able to get around 1 pound of fingering weight yarn on this winder. Ten ounces is about the maximum capacity of worsted weight yarn. Thicker yarns will be less. We have found that the capacity is about twice that of our little blue plastic winder.
About the belts: Urethane belting is a commonly used cheap power transmission method for this industry. These belts are designed to last about 10 years. If they stretch you can cut, heat the ends, and weld them back together. There is be a little "flashing" that will need to be cut. We also sell replacement belts.
Our warranty: Each jumbo ball winder we sell has a one year warranty from date of purchase against manufacturer's defects. You can tell when your item was produced by referencing the serial number on the bottom. We warrant each unit for the year on the bottom plus one year.
Items ship mostly assembled. Yarn not included.
Made in our Cincinnati, OH workshop.
I recently replaced my perfectly working older FAS winder with the new model because the new model doesn't need to be clamped - which is HUGE at my house. I used it for the fist time Saturday at a "Heritage day" spinning gig. Umbrella swift clamped to my chair, I wound about 600 yards of handspun with the winder sitting casually un-clamped on a small, folding plastic table. My cohort took the precaution of removing her open coffee cup from the table as I wound, but that was all. It wound like a dream. A rock solid, totally stable dream. I'm donating my old model to my guild. It still has a lot of life in it, and I don't have need or space for two. THANK YOU TIM!
I placed an order for 3 things a week ago and finally got my order 7 days later. GREAT. opened my boxes to see most ball winder already assembled. Fanstatic! just have to put the belt on and guide shaft and I was ready to go. I've used the other brand jumbo wooden ball winder and this one I have to see is obviously a lot lighter and smoother running. I'm very happy with the quality of this ball winder. I've tested it already with 1 cake made. I can't wait to put it to use. Now I just have to assemble and test out the standing yarn swift/skein winder.
I bought my winder a couple of years ago. Around 2014-2015. At the time it was priced at 89.99. I use it often and I love it. My winder looks a lot different than the one shown. I suppose it’s progress making the unit a bit smaller. My yarn guide stays in place it doesn’t move around. Either way is the best investment I’ve ever made. Thanks fiberartist.
This winder is the best! I think I have had it three years now and it works great, so much better than those little plastic and metal things I used before. The price is reasonable and I think mine will last forever. I have recommended it to others on Ravelry numerous times.
From cobweb to chunky, this winder does them all! I have used mine for over two years (fairly heavy use too) and it works like a champ. Highly recommend it.
I bought this winder and the large swift as a Christmas present to myself. They are both easy to set up and a joy to use. From my stash I did a test run, worsted to fingerling, a perfect center pull ball was produced every time. Customer Service was excellent. Though the website showed the winder as out of stock I contacted Tim and soon got an email that he had more ready to ship. I couldn't be more pleased with my purchases.
Received this beautiful ball winder as a Christmas gift from my son in 2015. This ball winder is expertly crafted and such a joy to use. It winds the most beautiful cake of yarn. It is heirloom quality and should give me years of use. If you are thinking about purchasing one, don't hesitate. You will not be disappointed. Customer service was excellent.
I just wound my first skein -- a 300 gm Wollmeise lace garn -- and it is a thing of beauty. The winder was easy to set up on my thick table, worked smoothly and quietly, and delivered a perfect cake. It's far superior to every other winder I've used!
I got this as a birthday gift and I just love it. It is beautiful and it works better than anything I've used in the past.
