A jumbo yarn winder from the Fiber Artist Supply Co. is crafted from hard maple and hard maple veneered premium plywood, both procured from American suppliers! The winder is 13-1/2"" in length and is 7" wide when the yarn guide is perpendicular to the base. The winder utilizes sealed ball bearings on the main crank disk and the disk that rides around the cone.
Yarn Capacity: The amount of yarn that this winder (or any winder) can hold depends on the tension placed on the yarn as it is fed into the unit and the thickness of the yarn. You should be able to get around 1 pound of fingering weight yarn on this winder. Ten ounces is about the maximum capacity of worsted weight yarn. Thicker yarns will be less. We have found that the capacity is about twice that of our little blue plastic winder.
About the Yarn Guide: Our innovative yarn guide allows the user to position the yarn guide in three different positions to ease guiding yarn from your swift. This not only adds to the versatility of the unit, it also minimizes the footprint of the winder. A 1/4"-20 screw secures the yarn guide securely to the metal inserts in the base. Note: that this feature is was not available when the most recent demonstration video was made.
About the belts: We tested about every power transmission method know to man prior to deciding on urethane belting. While belts do have a useful life of about 10 years depending on conditions, they are readily accessable and relatively cheap. Most modern spinning wheels use urethane belts, and they have proven to be quite suitable for this application.
Our warranty: Each jumbo ball winder we sell has a one year warranty from date of purchase against manufacturer's defects.
Made in our Cincinnati, OH workshop.

I bought this winder and the large swift as a Christmas present to myself.
They are both easy to set up and a joy to use. From my stash I did a test run, worsted to fingerling, a perfect center pull ball was produced every time.
Customer Service was excellent. Though the website showed the winder as out of stock I contacted Tim and soon got an email that he had more ready to ship. I couldn't be more pleased with my purchases.

Received this beautiful ball winder as a Christmas gift from my son in 2015. This ball winder is expertly crafted and such a joy to use. It winds the most beautiful cake of yarn. It is heirloom quality and should give me years of use. If you are thinking about purchasing one, don't hesitate. You will not be disappointed. Customer service was excellent.

I just wound my first skein -- a 300 gm Wollmeise lace garn -- and it is a thing of beauty. The winder was easy to set up on my thick table, worked smoothly and quietly, and delivered a perfect cake. It's far superior to every other winder I've used!

It is hard to find quality products in today's market, but this ball winder, as with anything produced by this company, is high quality and beautifully crafted. The winder operates smoothly, thus making the winding process quite effortless. I wanted a tool that would last a long time; I think my granddaughters will be using this yarn winder for many years after I am gone.

This winder is beautiful to look at, but more important, it's beautiful in the way it works!! I took it to a "caking" party where we all wound up balls of donated yarn. My winder worked at least twice, probably 3x, faster than the others (those plastic ones). The winding has a larger diameter wheel, so your winding is efficient It reminded me of the difference in pedaling a bicycle with teeny wheels (and a shorter pedaling radius) compared with pedaling a bike with larger wheels. This winder is worth every penny!!

Absolutely love my winder and swift. I was looking for a high quality, handcrafted set to go with my Kromski wheel and these fit the bill. Thank you!
